The government strongly believes that Canadians have the right to a secure retirement free from financial worry. I know that this is an issue of great concern to Hull–Aylmer residents.
Since our election in 2015, we helped seniors secure more income by restoring the age of eligibility for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement to 65. With that same goal in mind, we also enhanced the Pension Plan and increased the Guaranteed Income Supplement for single individuals by up to $947 per year. This measure helps nearly 900,000 vulnerable seniors, 70% of whom are women.
All Canadians deserve peace of mind when it comes to their retirement and companies must act in good faith towards their employees. We know, however, that many Canadians face hardship, including in Hull–Aylmer, when businesses go bankrupt. This is why, in the coming months, we are going to gather comments and suggestions from retirees in order to take effective measures that guarantee everyone a secure retirement.
Our seniors contributed in making Canada the success that it is. We owe then a well-earned, worry-free retirement.
